The new brand „Remembrance con- nects“ has a variety of objectives. In addition to the external effect on tourism, it must also have an inter- nal effect. Awareness raising and political acceptance are important aspects for a sustainable implemen- tation of the cross-border tourism brand. Educational mission One of the most important ways of transforming cultural-historical val- ues or events into the following gen- erations is cultural tourism. Educational tourism is a segment of cultural tourism. It aims at informing travellers intensively, specifically, vividly and at authentic places about a certain topic. The resulting educa- tional gain goes far beyond that of a general cultural trip. Educational tours are predominantly aimed at travel groups, e.g. pupils, students, specialist groups and experts. Due to the high density of educa- tionally relevant historical topics and memorial sites, the Oder-Warta re- gion is predestined for educational tours. Therefore, educational and remembrance tourism is a focus segment for the orientation of the new brand. Raising awareness of own regional history Unlike individual cultural/memorial tourism destinations (e.g. Allied Mu- seum Berlin), the image of a remem- brance landscape depends on the joint presentation of all participating locations. In addition, employees of the tour- ism service providers (hotel, gas- tronomy, tourist information, etc.) as well as the inhabitants of a region form a further, often underestimated presentation level. Their role as „cul- tural ambassadors“ sometimes even has a more lasting effect on guests than the memorial sites themselves, because they are unmediated and authentic. As an essential goal of the brand, inhabitants of all gener- ations should be developed into cultural ambassadors, especially in cross-border cooperation. Political acceptance and long-term support It is essential that “ Remembrance connects” is politically accepted as a brand and philosophy on both sides of the border and that it is supported in the long term. The implementa- tion of the brand and the sustainable creation of the necessary tourism infrastructure in the region cannot be realised without political support and public subsidies. Therefore, an important target function is aware- ness raising and regular exchange at the political level. Sustainability Climate protection and sustainabili- ty are significant challenges of our time and are now widely anchored in the general consciousness. Sus- tainable tourism should help to pre- serve the nature and culture of the destinations, protect the climate and resources, be fair for the people in- volved and make ecological and economic sense. Climate-friendly transport, sustain- able accommodation, zero-waste events or barrier-free offers are just a few areas that are also the focus of the new brand “ Remembrance connects”.
