This is where a navi- gable connection to and from Berlin ended (or began). Until the construc- tion of the Finow Canal, the onward transport of goods to the Oder River was carried out overland from here. Fürstenwalde experienced a further boom after the town was appointed the seat of the bishopric of Lebus in the 14 th century. In 1385 , along with the cities of Brandenburg an der Havel and Havelberg, it was one of the three historic Marche cathedral cities and bishop‘s seats. From 1891 , following a decree by the Prussian government, the Fürstenwalde Spree was extended as part of the Oder-Spree Canal and henceforth provided a navigable waterway to the Oder River.
