In the district of Märkisch-Oderland, several bunker buildings today serve as reminders of the preparations for a possible conflict with NATO troops. Fortunately, the Cold War never turned into an actual war. The former bunker buildings, some of which have been authentically preserved, are reminders and admonishments of this aspect of European history. Between 1972 and 1975 , the National People‘s Army‘s Organisation and Computer Centre ( ORZ ) was built near Garzau. In the nuclear bomb-proof underground, all relevant data on the state of the army was collected on a mainframe computer in the form of daily reports on strength, stocks and incidents from all three branches of the National People‘s Army. The ORZ made the data available to the Ministry of National Defence (Mf NV ) based in Strausberg and thus functioned as the „staff‘s operational information system“. The above-ground barracks complex consisted mainly of the staff building with kitchen wing and dining hall and the guard building. The two floors of the actual bunker, measuring just under 50 by 45 metres, was located away from the buildings about 15 metres below the earth‘s surface. The staff building and the bunker were con- nected via a nearly 200 -metre-long tunnel. The bunker can be visited as part of guided tours. In the following years, this led to the steady expansion of the district town with further military facilities and new housing estates for the members of the ministry and the National People‘s Army respectively. As part of a programme adopted by the party and state leadership in 1973 to build a modern telephone and telex network, the construction of a new underground communications node on the outskirts of the city also followed from the late 1970 s onwards. Under the name „Objekt 17 / 201 – Führungs- Strausberg Culture Bunker As the most important communications node in the territory of the GDR, the post bunker was meant to ensure numerous communications links in the event of a military conflict. stelle des Zentralstabes der Deut- schen Post in Strausberg“ (Object 17 / 201 – Command and Control Cen- tre of the Central Staff of the German Post Office in Strausberg), one of the most important and modern bunker facilities in the territory of the GDR was built here, hidden from the public. With the collapse of the SED regime, the bunker was also abandoned. Since 2019 , the bunker. with its more than 200 rooms, has gradually been transformed into the „Kulturbunker Strausberg“ (Strausberg Culture Bun- ker). With completion of the work, both the bunker and the underground gallery in the former access tunnel can be visited on guided tours.
